⑦ 今日阅读|25分钟

Controlling Deflection, Vibration and Cracking

Structural members must not only resist failure but also perform satisfactorily during normal use. Excessive deflection, vibration, and cracking can affect the comfort of occupants and the function of a building, even when the structure remains safe.

Deflection occurs when a structural member changes shape under load. Beams and slabs normally deflect slightly, but excessive deflection may damage finishes, affect doors and windows, or create visible unevenness in floors and ceilings.

Vibration is repeated movement caused by activities such as walking, machinery, traffic, or wind. A floor may have sufficient strength but still vibrate too much. This can make occupants uncomfortable and reduce confidence in the building.

Cracking commonly occurs in concrete and masonry. Some small cracks may be acceptable, but excessive or uncontrolled cracking can allow water to enter, damage finishes, and reduce durability. Engineers therefore control deflection, vibration, and cracking through proper member sizing, reinforcement, detailing, and construction.
